Ground Beetles in Three western washington

A report by Chris Maynard on his year long investigation of the diversity, distribution and activity of beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) at south sound prairies and oak woodlands. More than 20 species were found, including a high percentage of the introduced beetle, Calathus fuscipes. Read the report here.

Gophers and Beetles at Mima Mounds
With gophers making conservation news lately, it seems like a good opportunity to draw attention to this article entitled: Implications of Subfossil Coleoptera for the Evolution of the Mima Mounds of Southwestern Puget Lowland, Washington. Published in 1997, this article by Robert E. Nelson indicates a strong relationship exists between beetle remains found at Mima mounds and the historic presence of fossorial rodents. Mazama Pocket Gophers
take up residence at Wolf Haven
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, together with The Nature Conservancy
have been working against the clock to save gophers living in a Tumwater development area.
So far the project has met with success and more than 75 gophers have new home in the Wolf Haven
