Americorps In Action

The Center for Natural Lands Management partners with the Washington Service Corps to recruit Americorps members each year to help with volunteer coordination, plant production and monitoring on the South Sound Prairies.

Individual Placements:

Prairie Restoration:  
Assists with seasonal on-the-ground restoration actions at several South Sound prairie preserves and propagates plants at the native plant nursery. Restoration tasks include control of invasive species, prescribed fire application, outplanting of native plants and monitoring of key animal and plant species. The broad range of nursery activities will include native seed processing, seed bed maintenance, and plug sowing.

Volunteer Coordinator and Outreach: 
Help run the robust South Sound volunteer program and expand our communication and networking tools. Work with volunteers includes outreach, recruitment, and facilitation of work days across prairie preserves. Outreach tasks will include maintenance of the program website, management and expansion of our social networking tools and presentations about our program at local and regional job fairs.

Native Plant Propagation Specialist: 
Assists at the native plant nurseries (2/3 of time) and conducts restoration on prairie preserves (1/3 of time). Tasks include: native seed processing and coordination of nursery plant production, native seed collection, control of invasive species and monitoring key animal and plant species on prairie preserves.

Prairie and Riparian Science Specialist:
Provides support to our many ongoing experiments targeting effective restoration techniques for western Washington prairies. The person in this position will spend 60% of his/her time assisting staff with experimental research, species monitoring, and data management; the remaining 40% will be spent assisting staff with on-the-ground restoration practices including propagation and planting native species.
