   ONGOING RESTORATION ACTIONS such as invasive plant control, native plantings,

    and restoring ecological processes are taking place on south Sound Prairies at: Glacial

    Heritage Preserve (owned by Thurston Co.), Morgan Preserve and Cavness Easement,

    managed by The Nature Conservancy; Mima Mounds, Rocky Prairie, and  Bald Hills

    Natural Area Preserves (owned and managed by WDNR); West Rocky and Scatter Creek

    Wildlife Areas (owned and managed by WDFW); Wolf Haven International; the Olympia

    Airport and  Fort Lewis.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

  United States Fish and Wildlife Service has provided longstanding support to a wide variety of

  partners in the south Puget Sound prairie landscape by funding a diversity of projects.  Among the

  many supported by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, a few current projects are:

 > Butterfly Habitat Enhancements

 > Aquisition of Morgan Prairie

 > Restoration at Glacial Heritage and Morgan Prairies

 > Development of a Prairie Landowner Guide

 >  Golden paintbrush (Castilleja levisecta) restoration

Fort Lewis

>  Native Plant Propagation at the Fort

>  Significant funding provided via the Army Compatible Use Buffer Program

    (ACUB)  for habitat management to promote recovery of federal candidate species

    on prairie lands outside the Fort.

>  Habitat quality monitoring of vegetation and soil composition on all Fort Lewis

    prairies.

>  Candidate Conservation Agreement

>  Taylor’s checkerspot and mardon skipper surveys on the Artillery Impact Area

>  Taylor’s checkerspot survey at Bald Hill NAP and Weyerhauser Bald

>  Streaked horned lark predator identification study

>  Gopher occupancy study on south sound prairies

>  Prairie Habitat Monitoring, including vegetation surveys on all south sound prairies

>  Candidate Conservation Agreement

>  Butterfly Habitat Enhancements for Taylor's checkerspot and mardon skipper at unoccupied sites in south Sound. (w/TNC & WDNR).

>  Project Bluebird – cavity creation and outreach and education on Wolf Haven,

    Glacial Heritage Preserve , and Morgan Preserve (w/Pacific Education Institute)

>  Implementation of management funding provided by ACUB

>  Management of restoration at the Hawk’s Prairies Landfill (w/City of Olympia)

>  Community prairie oak woodland garden (upcoming w/Port of Olympia / Sound 

    Native Plants)
